Runza
We live in Nebraska. We love Runza. Those two things usually go together. I still absolutely love going to Runza and getting one of their delicious runzas, burgers, chicken sandwiches, or just about anything else on their menu, but sometimes it just works better to make a big batch of these at home and have them readily available for us to enjoy. Plus, we can make them a little healthier with ground turkey OR try out different combinations like lasagna runza….yes that happened….it was interesting…..
Runza
Prep time: 1 hour | Cook time: 18-20 minutes
Ingredients
Dough: (or use Rhodes frozen dough-defrost and let it rise)
- 4 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1/4 cup Sugar
- 2 pkgs (1/4 oz) Yeast
- 1 tsp Salt
- 3/4 cup Milk
- 1/2 cup Water
- 1/2 cup Butter
- 2 Eggs
Filling:
- 2 lbs Ground Beef or ground turkey
- 4 cups Cabbage, chopped
- 2 tsp Seasoned Salt
- 1 tsp Pepper
Instructions
Dough
Start by placing 1 1/2 cups flour, sugar, yeast, and salt into your mixer or large bowl.
In a microwave safe bowl, heat the milk, water, and butter to 120-130 degrees F.
Then pour into the flour mixture.
Once mixed, stir in beaten eggs.
Then add the remaining 3 cups of flour.
When the dough comes together and is smooth, place in a greased bowl, cover and let rise for 1 hr.
Filling:
While dough is rising, cook meat over medium-high heat until meat is no longer pink. Drain. Stir in the chopped cabbage, seasoned salt, and pepper. Stir until cabbage is wilted.
Put it together:
Divide into 12 equal portions.
Roll each piece into a rectangle or similar shape.
Place about half a cup of filling into the center of each dough piece. Pull the sides in, pinch it together and add to a baking sheet that is either greased or has parchment paper on it.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.
These also freeze great!
